Mastering The Modern 70’s

The 70’s are back in a big way, and welcoming the era of bellbottoms and paisley print back in to your house can be challenging.

We’ve put together a simple guide to help you look more, well, put together, when it comes to orange velvet and wicker furniture (eek?)

Remember, stick to your basics and work with what you have, accessories come later.

The Print

Introducing a bold printed pattern-whether it be a canvas, small print off, textile, or wall paper, is a great way to introduce those colours and patterns that were so big in the 70’s, but may be a little overwhelming now. A print that introduces textures or a repetitive one colour pattern-like those above- gives you the chance to draw in shapes-such as lines or circles, while bringing in a complimentary colour scheme. It can also be a great way to compliment that older style villa, rather than a clash of modern furniture against an older style home.

The Sofa

Choosing the perfect couch can be hard at the best of times, but when you start to introduce more untraditional colours and fabrics, it can be pretty intimidating. If you decide a new armchair or sofa is the way to welcome the 70s into your lounge we recommend a more muted, burnt orange,  tan or even a light brown leather. Fur throws and cushions can soften the area-try white, soft blues or browns and yellows. Spindle legs lift the colour from the floor and soften the whole look, rather than a large bulky couch which can make the colour more of a dominating feature rather than complimentary.

The Furnishings

In keeping with the theme try to bring in wickers, cane furniture and dark wood grains. The 70s were all about natural elements and materials, with furniture that blended seamlessly into the rest of the house, rather than stood out in bold bright colours and harsh shapes. Much of this style is reflected in current trends, with Scandi style furnishing drawing closely from original era pieces. With these new styles readily available it’s a great way to get the look for less.
